AI Overviews in Australia: What They Are Doing to Your Clicks

The short version: An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows above the normal results, and 64% of Australians have already encountered one. When it appears above a search you rank for, the top organic result's click-through rate falls somewhere between 34.5% and 58%, depending on which dataset you read. Most of that click is gone for good - but getting cited inside the Overview recovers some of it, and a small number of responses measurably help.

The AI Overview sits above the fold. Everything that used to be position one now starts lower.

# What an AI Overview is, and how many Australians have already seen one

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google inserts above the normal blue links, assembled from several sources at once rather than pointing a searcher at a single page. Google calls the underlying method "query fan-out" - the system quietly runs several related searches behind the one you typed, then writes a summary from what comes back. It is not a new ranking factor bolted onto the existing result; it is a different surface sitting on top of it.

Google's own AI features documentation is explicit that there are no special optimisations required to appear in an AI Overview beyond the standard requirements: your page needs to be indexable, eligible for a snippet, and technically sound. The fundamentals that mattered before - crawlability, page quality, structured data - still matter. What has changed is what sits above your listing when they work.

The reach in Australia is already wide. DataReportal's Digital 2026 Australia report puts the share of Australians who have encountered an AI Overview at 64%. That is not a niche behaviour confined to early adopters - it is most of the searching population, on searches many of them ran without noticing anything had changed. For the fuller picture of how this fits alongside AI chat assistants like ChatGPT, see CalnetCorp's GEO pillar for Australian businesses, which covers the wider shift from ranking to recommendation.

An AI Overview is not a new competitor sitting beside your listing. It is a new layer sitting above every listing on the page, including yours. The ranking underneath has not necessarily changed - what changed is how far down the page a searcher has to scroll before they reach it.

- Why an AI Overview is a structural change, not a ranking change.

# What it does to the click on the result below it

Ranking first still gets you the top slot - it just does not pay what it used to. Ahrefs' study of 300,000 keywords found the top organic result's click-through rate fell 34.5% on searches where an AI Overview appeared, against comparable searches with none. eMarketer's coverage of the study carried the same figure to a wider business audience, and it became the headline number most of the industry now cites.

It has not stayed at 34.5%. Ahrefs' follow-up data from December 2025 puts the drop closer to 58% for the same position. Whatever ground position one held onto through the first wave of AI Overviews, it has been giving more of it up since.

There is a genuine second half to this story, and it is recent. Seer Interactive's February 2026 update, drawn from 5.47 million tracked queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions across 53 brands, found industry-wide CTR on AI-Overview-affected queries climbing from a low of 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% by February 2026 - an 85% recovery in two months. It still trails the 3.8% CTR that queries with no AI Overview manage over the same period, so the gap has narrowed rather than closed. Citation status inside the Overview matters most: Seer found being cited delivers 120% more clicks per impression than not being cited, though even cited pages still run about 38% behind a page with no AI Overview competing for attention at all.

# The zero-click picture in Australia specifically

Most Australian Google searches already end without anyone clicking anything, and an AI Overview makes that outcome more likely, not less. DataReportal's Digital 2026 Australia data puts the baseline zero-click rate - searches that end on the results page with no click through to any site - at 65%. When an AI Overview is present on that search, the rate climbs to 83%.

This matters more in Australia than the global averages suggest, because so much of the Australian small-business economy already treats a website as its primary customer touchpoint. ABS data on business use of information technology shows how deeply that reliance runs. A business that depends on search traffic to be found, and finds that traffic increasingly stops at the results page, is losing a channel it may not have realised was shrinking - because nothing about the experience looks broken from the outside. The searches still happen. The rankings often still hold. The click is what disappears.

# Which query types trigger one - and which of yours are exposed

Exposure is not evenly spread, and knowing where your traffic sits on this spectrum tells you how urgent this actually is for your business. Seer Interactive's April 2026 analysis of 5.47 million tracked queries broke trigger rate down by query type, and the range is enormous.

Comparison searches - the "X vs Y" format - triggered an AI Overview 95.4% of the time. Question-format searches ("how do I", "what is", "why does") triggered one 85.9% of the time, and review-intent searches 86.3%. At the other end, commercial queries triggered an AI Overview only 8% of the time, and narrowly transactional queries - the kind a buyer types moments before purchasing - just 5%. Even single-word informational queries, which intuition suggests would be too broad to summarise, still triggered one 27.3% of the time.

The practical read for an Australian business: if your organic traffic leans heavily on "best [service] in [suburb]", "[competitor] vs [you]", or "how to choose a [category]" queries, you are in the high-exposure band and the numbers in the previous two sections apply to you close to in full. If most of your traffic arrives on a named-brand or clearly transactional search - someone typing your business name, or "[service] booking [suburb]" - the AI Overview problem is smaller for you than the headline statistics suggest, and other parts of the funnel deserve attention first.

# How to tell what you have already lost

Search Console got meaningfully better at answering this question in June 2026, but it still cannot answer it fully. Google added a dedicated Generative AI performance report, sitting alongside the standard Performance report, filterable by Search Appearance equals AI Overview. Search Engine Journal's breakdown of the rollout confirms it shows impressions by page, country, device and date - a real improvement on having no visibility into AI Overview exposure at all.

The gap is what it still will not show you. The report currently reports impressions only: no clicks, no click-through rate, no average position, and no view of which passage of your page was actually quoted. You can now see that Google showed your page inside an AI Overview a certain number of times. You still cannot see, from that report alone, whether anyone acted on it.

The workable method combines two things. First, pull the new Generative AI report for your highest-traffic query themes and note which ones generate meaningful AI Overview impressions - that tells you your exposure. Second, go to the standard Performance report, filter to those same queries, and compare click-through rate before and after the query started reliably showing an AI Overview (Search Console lets you set a custom date range either side of a known trigger date). The delta between those two periods, for a query you know did not move in ranking, is the closest a business can currently get to seeing the actual click loss rather than inferring it from someone else's study.

# The two responses that work, and the one that does not

Trying to opt out of AI Overviews entirely is the response that does not work; earning the citation and reducing reliance on that one click are the two that do.

What does not work: blocking your way out. Google documents nosnippet and noindex as the controls available to keep a page out of AI features. Both work as advertised - and both remove the page from ordinary rich snippets and featured results across the rest of Google Search at the same time, not just from AI Overviews. For almost every Australian small business, the visibility you would give up across the whole of Search is a worse trade than the click share you are trying to protect. This is a lever built for a narrow set of legal or brand-safety cases, not a general response to falling CTR.

What works, response one: earn the citation instead of avoiding the surface. Seer Interactive's data above showed cited pages earning 120% more clicks per impression than uncited ones on the same query type. The mechanics of earning a citation are the same fundamentals covered in CalnetCorp's GEO pillar: answer-first structure that states the specific answer in the first sentence, clean entity data, and content a summarising system can lift as a self-contained passage rather than one that builds to a conclusion over several paragraphs.

What works, response two: stop treating the AI Overview click as the whole game. If 65-83% of your category's searches were already ending without a click before you read this, the AI Overview accelerated an existing trend rather than inventing a new one. Being named inside an AI chat answer runs on a mostly separate mechanism from earning an AI Overview citation - Ahrefs found only around 12% of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10 for the same prompt - so a business that fixes one does not automatically fix the other. The businesses least exposed to this shift are the ones already earning attention through channels an AI Overview cannot intercept - Google Business Profile, reviews, direct traffic from repeat customers, and being named inside AI chat answers rather than just summarised in search results. CalnetCorp's guide on tracking ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4 covers the measurement side of that second, AI-assistant channel.

# What to do if your category is fully AIO-covered

If your own Search Console data shows an AI Overview on nearly every query that matters to you, click-through rate stops being a metric you can move much on its own, and mention rate becomes the number worth tracking instead. A business whose category sits in the comparison or review-query band from earlier in this guide - trades, professional services, anything routinely searched as "best X near me" or "X vs Y" - should expect this to be closer to permanent than temporary.

The response is not to abandon the queries. It is to change what you are optimising for on them. Instead of chasing the click you are increasingly unlikely to get, work the levers that decide whether you are the business named inside the summary at all: third-party corroboration across the two or three sites your category actually reads, a review profile that clears the confidence threshold engines use, and entity data that removes any ambiguity about which business is being described. The same corroboration problem shows up hardest in local search - SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found AI assistants recommend local businesses at a fraction of the rate Google's own local pack does. CalnetCorp's guide to why ranking does not get you recommended by AI covers the same argument for AI chat assistants, and the levers overlap heavily with what earns an AI Overview citation.

Fully AIO-covered categories are also where the gap between businesses that measure this properly and businesses that do not will widen fastest, because the ones relying on gut feel about "traffic feeling soft lately" have no way to tell a genuine ranking problem from an AI Overview eating the click regardless of ranking. Read those two causes apart before spending on either fix.

Frequently asked questions

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google places above the normal blue links on a search results page. It is generated from several sources at once rather than pointing to a single page, using a technique Google calls query fan-out - issuing multiple related searches behind the scenes to build one answer. Google's own documentation states there are no special optimisations required to appear in one, beyond standard indexability and content quality.
64%, according to DataReportal's Digital 2026 Australia report. That figure covers anyone who has encountered one, not how often they see one on a given day, so the practical exposure for a habitual searcher is higher again.
Ahrefs measured a 34.5% drop in click-through for the top organic result across 300,000 keywords when an AI Overview appeared, compared with matched keywords that had none. A later Ahrefs dataset from December 2025 put the drop closer to 58%. Seer Interactive's February 2026 update found some recovery industry-wide - CTR on AI-Overview-affected queries climbed from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% by February 2026 - but that still trails the 3.8% CTR on queries with no AI Overview at all.
No, and the gap by query type is large. Seer Interactive's April 2026 study of 5.47 million queries found comparison searches (X vs Y) trigger one 95.4% of the time and question-format searches 85.9%, while commercial queries trigger one only 8% of the time and transactional queries just 5%. A business whose traffic is mostly bottom-funnel transactional terms is far less exposed than one that ranks for informational or comparison queries.
Yes, using the nosnippet or noindex controls Google documents for its AI features - but the cost is high. Those same controls also remove the page from ordinary rich snippets and featured results across regular Google Search, not just AI Overviews. For almost every Australian small business the lost visibility across the rest of Search outweighs whatever click share opting out would protect.
Google added a dedicated Generative AI performance report to Search Console in June 2026, filterable by Search Appearance equals AI Overview, showing impressions by page, country, device and date. It is a genuine improvement, but it currently reports impressions only - no clicks, no average position, and no view of which passage was used. Pair it with a before/after read of your standard Performance report on the queries you know trigger an AI Overview.
Yes, measurably. Seer Interactive found being cited inside an AI Overview delivers 120% more organic clicks per impression than an equivalent page that is not cited - though even cited pages still underperform a normal result with no AI Overview at all by about 38%. Being cited is worth pursuing; it just is not a full replacement for the click you would have had before AI Overviews existed.
