# For local businesses, the numbers are worse

Across nearly 350,000 business locations, ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of them. The same businesses appeared in Google's local 3-pack 35.9% of the time. That is SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering 2,751 multi-location brands, reported by Search Engine Land - and Localogy's analysis of the same report puts AI visibility at three to thirty times harder to win than traditional local search.

Sit with the ratio for a moment. These are established brands with resourced marketing teams, and ChatGPT names one in eighty of their locations. For a typical Australian small business - thinner profiles, fewer reviews, no dedicated agency - the odds are longer still. If an AI engine has ever named your business, you are already in rare company.

# Why the two systems disagree

Google ranks pages against a query. An AI engine names entities it holds confident, corroborated knowledge about. Those are different questions, answered from different evidence.

Your ranking is a property of a page: its relevance, its links, its performance against a specific search. A recommendation is a property of your business as the engine understands it - what you do, where you operate, whether independent sources agree, whether the reviews are recent and real. # How to check your own position in ten minutes

Write five prompts a real customer would use, ask them across two engines, and record who gets named. That is the whole method, and it beats any tool you can buy.

The five prompts: "best [your service] in [your suburb]", "who should I use for [service] near [area]", "recommend a [service] business in [city]", "[your business name] reviews - are they good", and "is [your business name] a real business". # What to fix first, in order

Profiles, reviews, consistency, then content - in that order, because that is the order of evidence.

1. Complete the profiles engines actually read. Google Business Profile fully filled, not just claimed. Then Bing Places, because ChatGPT's browsing leans on Bing's index - the twenty-minute job almost no Australian business has done, which is precisely why it moves the needle.

2. Reviews, recent and real. Volume and recency on the platform that dominates your category. Ask every happy customer; never buy or fabricate - the ACCC's rules on online reviews apply, and engines are increasingly good at spotting patterns.

3. One set of facts, everywhere. Same business name, same phone number, same service area on your site, your profiles and the directories that matter. Every mismatch is a reason for an engine to lower its confidence - or merge you with someone else.
